LEXINGTON, Ky. — Sean White will remain Auburn's starting quarterback for Thursday night's game at Kentucky, but coach Gus Malzahn said backup Jeremy Johnson could play as well.
Malzahn threw open the starting job after Auburn's fifth game, looking to White and Johnson to win the job through last week's open date and in this week's preparation leading up to the game.
"Sean White has done a great job," Malzahn before kickoff. "He responded to the competition.
"I think each time he plays he gets more and more comfortable."
Malzahn said it was "the right time and the right situation" to open up the quarterback competition.
"The team responded to both," he said.
Johnson took all the snaps in the first three games. White was the only quarterback in the next two games, bringing Auburn to its 3-2 record.
White has hit 26 of 38 passes for 296 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Johnson has hit 43 of 72 passes for 473 yards and five touchdowns and six interceptions.
White's first action was his start against Mississippi State on Sept 26. He became the first Auburn quarterback to make his first start in an SEC game since Jeff Klein did it against Tennessee in 1999.
