AUBURN, Ala.  Cameron Artis-Payne is ahead of Tre Mason's rushing pace of a year ago. He's third in the SEC in rushing this day.

But Auburn coach Gus Malzahn says his running back is taking nothing for granted.

"He's real tough on himself," Malzahn said. "He wants to be perfect, he plays with an edge and I'm sure everything accounts to that edge that he plays with."

Artis-Payne will now carry his 594 yards into Saturday's 2:30 p.m. Top 3 showdown with Mississippi State in Starkville. Malzahn was asked after Wednesday's practice if he thought Artis-Payne was not receiving the proper credit.

"He's that type of guy that he probably likes that," Malzahn said. "He's not a big attention-getter guy. He's a go-to-work type of guy and do his job. He practices extremely hard, he's extremely hard on himself about the little things. He's always trying to get better and he's a tough guy.

"He's got experience in our offense, not just this year but last year. This year is different, he's trying to establish himself as the guy right now and he's doing a solid job."

Last seen, Artis-Payne had 126 yards and rushing touchdown in Auburn's 41-7 win over LSU.

Malzahn also said…

• Injured offensive lineman Pat Miller, who didn't dress out last Saturday, has practiced all three times this week. But he still remains "day-to-day."

• Corey Grant didn't get a carry until the fourth quarter against LSU.

"It takes a while to kind of feel that thing out, but we feel good about Corey. And we feel good about Corey running inside, too. I think everybody has seen we're very comfortable doing that."

• Wednesday's practice, as every Auburn Wednesday practice, was devoted to third downs and red zone offense and defense.

The Tigers must be paying attention. On offense, Auburn is second in the SEC in third-down conversions. On defense, LSU was 0-for-13 on third down tries against Auburn last week.

Auburn leads the SEC in red zone offense and is second in red zone defense.
