AUBURN, Ala. – Carl Lawson spent a lot of time in Ole Miss' backfield Saturday night, knocking down quarterbacks and tackling running backs and making a claim to be honored as the Southeastern Conference's freshman of the week.

The league announced Monday he won the award.

The rookie defensive lineman had two of Auburn's six sacks in the 30-22 win. He had six tackles overall, 3½ of those for a loss for minus-10 yards. He sacked Bo Wallace on the Rebels' final play.

"We stuck with technique and had great get-offs," Lawson said. "That helped us put pressure on the quarterback. What matters is how you finish. We needed to get some stops and come out there and finish. That’s what we did."

Defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson says he likes Lawson's progress for the 4-1 Tigers.

"He’s really starting to feel more comfortable with his assignments," Johnson said Sunday. "He’s able to play and turn himself loose. He’s always been physical and reckless, but when you do that and make a mistake or go the wrong way, it can be a bad situation. He is just getting more and more comfortable with what his job is."

Other weekly SEC winners were LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger for offense, Florida defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy for defense, Georgia place-kicker Marshall Morgan for special teams, Georgia's Chris Burnette for offensive line and Missouri's Michael Sam for defensive line.
