Auburn is feeling good after beating LSU in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn came ever-so-close to being ranked No. 1 in the AP poll on Sunday. The Tigers made it to the top in a different poll Monday.
The Tigers took the top spot in the Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll, which is run through the Football Writers Association of America and the National Football Foundation.
Auburn, coming off a 41-7 win over LSU, is second to Florida State in the AP poll, though just barely. FSU had 1,461 overall points to Auburn's 1,459 points. The Tigers are also second in the coaches poll.

In the Grantland Rice poll, Auburn leads Florida State, and just barely, 629 points to 626 points. Auburn would also be No. 1 using the formula of the old BCS standings.

Wherever they're ranked, the Tigers have a big test coming at Mississippi State, ranked as high as No. 3, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Both teams are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference.
The voters in the Grantland Rice poll are, according to the Football Foundation website, "FWAA writers, College Football Hall of Famers, NFF Board Members and highly regarded collegiate administrators who were selected to create a balanced-geographical perspective as well as a diversity of viewpoints from the different roles associated with the game."
The Grantland Rice's Top 10 consists of No. 1 Auburn, No. 2 Florida State, No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 4 Mississippi State, No. 5 Baylor, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Alabama, No. 8 Michigan State, No. 9 TCU and No. 10 Oregon.

Alas, none of the polls has a direct impact on who'll make the new college football playoffs. That will be decided by a 13-person committee who will "identify small groups of teams and then will evaluate those teams against each other in a detailed and deliberative manner. The committee members will then vote the teams into the rankings" with the top four teams making the playoffs.
The coaches poll is here.
