AUBURN, Ala. It was an early-season loss and then an off week. That's when Auburn fixed things last year, and then it was off to the races.

Auburn bounced back from a rainy loss at LSU last season, beat Ole Miss the next time out and went on to play for the national championship.

This year, the first of two bye weeks has come even earlier. The first, this week, is nestled after wins over Arkansas and San Jose State and before next Thursday night's game at Kansas State.

Alas, sometimes, said offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, when teams don't play, "a lot of people don't want to practice."

"We've got to win these three days and get much, much better at the details and the execution to where it not only helps us next week, but games down the road. I think it's huge for us."

Auburn is using this bye week smoothing out mistakes and preparing for Kansas State. The Tigers schedule included practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and off days Friday and Saturday.

The bye week gives a time for a quick reflection.

"It's big early in the year because you play one or two games, so you've got a good feel for the new personnel; you've kind of a feel how this team is coming together," Lashlee said. "It gives us a chance to have everybody as healthy as they can be, even though we've only played two games.

"We can really work on the direction we think we're going to go. You look at this time last year, we had just come off the LSU game 3 and 1. We had a week to regroup, refocus. I think that week is when we really made a lot of progress. We got better.

"The Ole Miss game we didn't play phenomenal, but we played better and we won; and we kind of got better each week after that. That's what we've been preaching to our guys. This is the week we've got to win."
