Auburn Football Practice Report
Sept. 10, 2009
Auburn, Ala. - The Auburn football team held its final practice prior to the 2009 Southeastern Conference opener against Mississippi State, practicing for 75 minutes on the practice fields behind the Athletics Complex. Thursday's workout gave Auburn a chance to go over final preparations for Saturday's game, as the Tigers conducted a situational practice in shorts and helmets with no contact. The squad went through every aspect of special teams and did more scout team preparation, before concluding with a two-minute drill. The Tigers will go through a short walk-through on Friday before hosting Mississippi State on Saturday in the league opener for both teams. Auburn leads the all-time series with Mississippi State, 57-23-2, and has won 20 of the last 27 in the series. The Tigers won last year's meeting in Starkville, 3-2, but the Bulldogs won on their last trip to Jordan-Hare Stadium, earning a 19-14 victory in 2007. Earlier this week during his Tuesday press conference, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik said the Tigers will have their hands full with a Mississippi State team, under the direction of first-year head coach Dan Mullen, that won its season opener, 45-7, against Jackson State last Saturday. "They have great energy and new energy," said Chizik. "Dan Mullen did a great job at Florida last year. His offense gives (us) a lot of things to work on, and on defense they are always flying around. They are a good team with a lot of talent. They had a great win (last) Saturday. They played real hard and with a lot of energy for Coach Mullen, so we have our work cut out for us." Quarterback Chris Relf led Mississippi State in rushing against Jackson State with 82 yards and a score, and also threw for three touchdowns on just 10 pass attempts. Running back Anthony Dixon, a second-team preseason All-SEC pick, missed last week's game, but will be back on the field against the Tigers on Saturday.
Linebacker Jamar Chaney, another preseason second-team All-SEC pick, led the Bulldog defense with five tackles against Jackson State, while Corey Broomfield returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown. The Bulldogs allowed Jackson State just 194 yards of offense, including just 62 rushing. Saturday's game against Mississippi State will kick off at 6 p.m. CT from Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports South, Sun Sports, Fox Sports Southwest, Fox Sports Wisconsin, Fox Sports Midwest, Fox Sports Houston (Louisiana) and Fox Sports West, and will be televised on a tape delayed basis on Fox Sports Arizona on Sunday at 7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT. This week's game is presented by ALLKids, a program administered by the Alabama Department of Public Health. Auburn Athletics and the ALLKids program would like to encourage all Kids Club members to wear their Tiger Kids Club T-shirts to campus for Saturday's game. One Tiger Kids Club member who is wearing the t-shirt will be selected to go to the Auburn sideline and be named 'Junior Tiger of the Game' during pre-game, courtesy of ALLKids, Alabama's Children's Health Insurance Program. |
