AUBURN, Ala. Roc Thomas has won the starting assignment at running back and Justin Garrett has won a start at one of the linebacker spots for Saturday's season opener against Louisville, but some positions are still unsettled on Auburn's first depth chart of the fall.

Tray Matthews, the transfer from Georgia, is a starting safety along with Rudy Ford, who led Auburn in tackles last season. Blake Countess, a transfer from Michigan, will start at cornerback along with veteran Jonathan Jones, who led Auburn in interceptions last year. Freshman Tim Irvin is listed as the first-team nickel back.

Austin Golson, a transfer from Ole Miss, won the starting center job.

Kevin Phillips has won the starting punting job, according to the depth chart released by Auburn on Tuesday. Eight true or redshirt freshman are Auburn's two-deep on offense. Five true or redshirt freshmen are listed on the two-deep defense.

One of the wide receiver positions is listed as Duke Williams or Tony Stevens. Ricardo Louis and Melvin Ray are the starters listed at the other wide receiver spots.

Five first-team positions are still up in the air, listed with an "or" between players competing for a start. Several backup positons are still unsettled as well. The return teams are also unsettled.

A lot of positions were as expected, notably Jeremy Johnson as the new starting quarterback and the much-talked-about Carl Lawson starting at defensive end after he missed last year following knee surgery.

Thomas will get the first crack at becoming Auburn's third straight 1,000-yard rusher, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Tre Mason and Cameron Artis-Payne. Peyton Barber and Jovon Robinson are listed as his backups.

The H-back positon is still a battle between Kamryn Pettway and Chandler Cox, the left guard is listed as between Alex Kozan or Devonte Danzy, one of the linebacker spots is a competition between Tre' Williams and Cassanova McKinzy, and the other linebacker spot is listed between Williams and Kris Frost.

The punt return starters are listed as Marcus Davis or Jason Smith or Gray King. The kick returners are listed as Ford, Thomas, Countess or Ricardo Louis.
