    Auburn Football Practice Report

    Aug. 26, 2010

AUBURN - The Auburn football team held its third practice in as many nights, working out in shells for two hours Thursday evening on the Athletics Complex practice fields.

The Tigers continued to emphasize scout team work on Thursday as the squad inches closer to the Sept. 4 season opener against Arkansas State. Thursday's practice also included special teams drills, as well as individual and position drills.

While meeting with the media on Thursday, head coach Gene Chizik stated that junior A.J. Greene has been named the starting right tackle, while sophomore Barrett Trotter will back up Cameron Newton at the quarterback position.

Greene emerged to win the starting spot despite having played in just three games during his career. He will join an offensive line in which the other four starters have a combined 109 starts.

"I don't think there's any question that he's one of the most improved on our team," said Chizik. "He's learned a lot of things in the last year. It just appears to me that it meant a lot to him to win that job, and he did."

As for Trotter, Chizik noted that the sophomore owns a lot of qualities that the coaching staff looks for in a quarterback.

"He throws a very accurate ball and has a great grasp of the offense," said Chizik. "He's been very consistent when it comes to doing the things that need to be done to win when you're playing the quarterback spot."

The Tigers will hold a walk-through on Friday morning before taking Saturday off. The team will return to the practice fields on Sunday at 6 p.m. CT.

Auburn opens the 2010 season on Sept. 4 against Arkansas State at 6 p.m. CT in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.

A limited number of season, mini-season and single-game tickets are still available. For more information, please visit www.auburntigers.com or call 1-800-AUB-1957.
