Carl Lawson looking for comeback season at Auburn
By Charles Goldberg
AUBURN, Ala. — Carl Lawson didn't play last season, but that hasn't stopped him from receiving plenty of publicity before the start of the 2015 season.
The Auburn defender was named to the Lombardi Award watch list Tuesday, joining teammates Avery Young and Cassanova McKinzy who were named to the list in July. The Lombardi Award is presented to the top college football lineman who demonstrates "outstanding performance and ability" and "best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi."
Lawson missed last season as he recovered from knee surgery, but he's ready to go this year for defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, who plans to use Lawson at defensive end and his stand-up Buck position. Muschamp had good things to say about Lawson during a Tiger Talk radio interview Monday night, as he did earlier in fall practice:
"I think the No. 1 thing is you have a really good edge rusher," Muschamp said. "No. 2, you have a guy on the field who plays with a high motor and affects everybody else… When a guy like that goes out and performs at a high level and is certainly one of our leaders, you're able to take examples of how hard he plays on the film. That says a lot from a coach's standpoint."
