AUBURN, Ala.  Auburn will start the football season ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press poll, a notable promotion from its No. 22 finish in the final rankings last season.

The Tigers, with Gus Malzahn's offense now coupled with Will Muschamp's defense, are looking for a turnaround from last season's 8-5 record.

Auburn is ranked No. 7 in the USA Today/coaches preseason poll that was released last month.

The Tigers have also received favorable press from others. Sports Illustrated has Auburn ranked No. 2, Sporting News and ESPN the Magazine have the Tigers ranked No. 3 and the CBS sports website has Auburn at No. 6.

Auburn was picked to win the SEC championship at SEC Media Days.

Eight Southeastern Conference teams are ranked in the AP poll, including five from the SEC West. Auburn plays five ranked teams: No. 3 Alabama, No. 9 Georgia, No. 14 LSU, No. 17 Ole Miss and No. 18 Arkansas.

Malzahn has taken an optimistic approach to the season, but his basic philosophy hasn't changed when it comes to preseason rankings.

"From a coach's standpoint, you don't get too caught up in preseason polls," he said in the spring. "Everything defines itself the second half of the season. That's when we tell our players: 'You'll earn it in the second half of the season.' Everything kind of falls in place to what you earn," he said.
