AUBURN -- Auburn sophomore Kiehl Frazier has been named the starting quarterback for the Tigers' season opener on Sept. 1 against Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game, head coach Gene Chizik announced Thursday.

"After a complete and thorough evaluation during spring practice and through the first three-plus weeks of camp, Kiehl Frazier has earned the starting job at quarterback," Chizik said. "We expect Kiehl to be a leader for this team and to continue to work hard every day. I am confident in his ability and leadership skills and look forward to watching him progress in both areas."

A native of Springdale, Ark., Frazier played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2011, completing 5-12 passes for 34 yards while rushing for 327 yards and three touchdowns on 76 rushing attempts.

Auburn returns to the practice fields Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT.
