The 19th-ranked Auburn football team returned from a two-day hiatus with a spirited practice session in full pads Tuesday evening.
The Tigers worked the first half of practice inside the new indoor practice facility, before switching to the outdoor practice fields for the latter half of the preparation session.
"Today I thought we had a good practice in full gear," head coach Gene Chizik said. "We did some good work against each other, plus also working on Utah State for the first time. We had a good balance overall. I thought we had a good tempo today. Overall, it was a good day."
Auburn used a pair of consecutive off days to allow several of the players dealing with some minor dings and scrapes to get back up to speed.
"I thought that again, some of the guys were nicked up and bruised, but they ran a little bit better out there today," Chizik said. "I thought a couple of days off helped for sure. Overall, I thought there was a little extra pep in their step. It was a good day."
With just 10 days remaining until the opener with Utah State, the coaching staff is also beginning to see a change in some of the team's newcomers as the focus of practice shifts to preparing for the opening opponent.
"I think it does and that the reality sets in that finally after three weeks of camp, it maybe dons on them that we are getting ready for a game," Chizik said. "I think the reality has set in.
"I think a lot of the younger guys are still trying to figure out how to prepare or how the flow of practice goes now when you are really starting to zero in on an opponent. Again, they are learning and every day will get a little smoother as we go."
Auburn and Utah State will kick-off at 11 am CT on September 3. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
