AUBURN - Auburn senior defensive end Antonio Coleman has been named to the 2009 Bronko Nagurski Award Pre-Season Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club announced Tuesday.
Coleman is one of 52 players named to the watch list. It is the fourth award watch list of the season for the Mobile, Ala., native as he is also on the Lombardi, Hendricks and Bednarik Award Watch Lists.
The Nagurski Award is given annually to the nation's best defensive player. The trophy has been presented since 1993 and is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, an All-American lineman at Minnesota from 1927-29 and a star professional with the Chicago Bears in the 1930s.
Players may be added or removed during the season. After the first four games of the season, the FWAA will revise the list and at that time school sports information directors may submit names for players not on the list to the FWAA and their conference's FWAA All-America Committee representative.
Coleman earned first-team All-SEC honors by the league's media and coaches in 2008 after registering 46 tackles, including team highs of six quarterback sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. He also had a team-high
13 quarterback hurries, as well as a forced fumble and a pass break-up.
He was named the SEC's Defensive Lineman of the Week following Auburn's
14-12 victory over Tennessee Sept. 27 after collecting four tackles including a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Coleman will enter his senior season with 30 career tackles for loss and 14.5 career sacks. He needs one more sack to crack Auburn's all-time top 10 list.
The award will be given on Dec. 7 at the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
