Auburn Football Practice Report
Aug. 14, 2009
AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn football team held its final session of two-a-day practices Friday, working for 90 minutes in the morning before conducting a short 45-minute workout late in the afternoon. The Tigers worked out in full pads in hot conditions in the morning session, before practicing in shells in the afternoon. A rainstorm blew through Auburn during the afternoon workout, providing some relief to the Tigers, who were practicing for the 10th straight day. Auburn's practices continued to include several position and group drills. The Tigers continue to install their offense and defense, and had the two units work against each other in the latter stages of each practice. Both workouts also included special teams drills. Following the afternoon practice, head coach Gene Chizik said that the energy level throughout the day was very good, particularly once the rain began, and he was pleased with the team's tempo. "We had a really good practice this morning," said Chizik. "We went full pads this morning and upper pads this afternoon, and cut practice a little short. We're going to do a team function tonight. We had a great blitz period today and some great special teams work. Overall, it was a very productive day." After the morning practice, offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn met with the media to discuss the staff's decision to name Chris Todd as the starting quarterback. "We wanted to be 100 percent sure who gave us the best chance at winning," said Malzahn. "Chris Todd has been very consistent, and this spring he was in there mentally, he's thrown the ball on time and just picked up the offense at a really fast pace. We felt like we needed to do it right now - it gives us three good weeks. We can start developing timing like we've been talking about this whole time. He fought hard and he won the job."
