AUBURN - The 19th-ranked Auburn football team returned to the practice fields Friday morning, working out for 80 minutes in full pads in the front end of the team's second "two-a-day" practice of preseason camp.
After the team took Thursday off following Wednesday's scrimmage, head coach Gene Chizik was pleased with the team's enthusiasm early in the workout but said the intensity could have been better toward the end of the session.
"I thought we went out today and started practice off at a great, great tempo," he said. "I wish we would have maintained that same tempo near the end. I thought we dropped off just a little bit, but it was a good day overall.
"We had some new installations on both sides of the ball, so it got a little sloppy out there, especially with some of the young guys still learning. The effort was really good and we've got another practice tonight, so we're going to stay on track installing and moving forward with what we're putting in. We're making some progress, but we've got a ways to go."
Chizik also offered some further thoughts about Wednesday's scrimmage after reviewing the film on the team's day off.
"What sticks out to me is a lot of the young guys," Chizik said. "Not that some of the older guys didn't play well, but when it comes to the young running backs, I thought they had a nice day. I thought Corey Grant, Tre Mason and Mike Blakely ran the ball well. We gave them a lot of opportunities (Wednesday). We wanted to see where they were.
"(Defensive back) Erique Florence, on the other side of the ball, continues to have some good days. He's learning, and the process has been fast back there, but he had a forced fumble and was really playing aggressive. Angelo Blackson on the defensive line, another young guy that's really coming along, he's one of those young guys we hope just pops up and does a great job for us. He's definitely working in that direction."
The Tigers will head back out this evening at approximately 5:40 p.m. for their second practice of the day as they prepare for another scrimmage on Saturday morning.
