Autographs, handshakes and smiles at Auburn Fan Day

Defensive back Blake Countess meets his public at Auburn Fan Day

By Charles Goldberg

AUBURN, Ala. Bob Arrington and son Dawson figured they'd get some autographs. You know, Jeremy Johnson, Gus Malzahn and a lot of other Auburn football players.

The Arringtons were not alone.

Johnson, Auburn's starting quarterback, blew threw one Sharpie then another and another signing autographs; and Malzahn, Auburn's head coach, did the meet and greet and autograph signing for more than two hours as the Tigers celebrated Fan Day in Auburn Arena on Sunday.

Auburn said more than 5,000 fans attended.

Arrington lives in McDonough, Ga., but was "born in Opelika and raised an Auburn fan."

"And my son is following in my footsteps."

Arrington said he likes Fan Day because he can "get on a personal side with the players as well as the coaches, to be able to shake hands with them, get some pictures, get some autographs."

That was the theme, whether it was linebacker Kris Frost posing for photos with fans; the long line for defense's Carl Lawson, who missed last season with an injury; or the longer line for Johnson, who is taking over for Nick Marshall.

Some could sneak off for bags of potato chips stationed around the arena, seeing that the event was sponsored by Golden Flake. Others, such as Johnson, were running out of ink.

Malzahn signed posters and hats and footballs and who knows what else.

One item, a fan said, had Tommy Tuberville's autograph on the other side. "His son is doing real well for us," Malzahn said of Tucker Tuberville.

Malzahn shared plenty of "War Eagles" with fans, and the fans shared their well-wishes for 2015.

Members of the soccer and volleyball teams signed autogrpahs, as well, as did the cheerleaders and Tiger Paws.

And so it was, the way Malzahn and the players spent one of their few off days this August. Monday, they'll be back at work for their first scrimmage of the preseason across the street in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
