AUBURN - The 2011 Auburn football season began Wednesday with the first practice of fall camp on the Athletic Complex practice fields. The Tigers practiced in helmets in shorts under the lights Wednesday night in their renovated facility.
Head coach Gene Chizik, in his third year leading the Auburn program, said that he was pleased with the effort he saw from his squad on the opening day of practice.
"Tonight was a very energetic, really enthusiastic practice and for the first night was pretty sharp for the most part," said Chizik. "It was a good first day all the way around, but obviously we have to get better every single day. I was really pleased with the first practice."
For the third year in a row, the Tigers opened fall camp a split-session practice that allowed players to receive more repetitions while keeping the work shorter and more intense. While one of the two groups was on the field, the other was in the weight room with the Tigers' strength and conditioning staff.
"I was really impressed with our young guys, meaning our freshman class," said Chizik. "They showed some impressive athleticism across the board. Of course, without pads on it is an unrealistic picture. I was really impressed with their effort and their focus."
Midway through the practice, both groups converged for special teams work, before swapping from weight room to practice fields, and vice versa.
Individual work was the theme for the majority of the day, with the special teams drills included as well.
The Tigers will return to the practice fields Thursday at 4:30 p.m. CT.
Auburn will open the 2011 season Sept. 3 vs. Utah State at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2 with kickoff set for 11 a.m. CT.
