AUBURN -- The Auburn Tigers began practice Wednesday afternoon, holding their first workout of the 2012 preseason at the Auburn Athletics Complex Practice Fields.
Coach Gene Chizik's squad worked out for two hours in shorts. With temperatures well into the 90s, the 105 Tigers assembled worked both indoors and outside during their first team session of the preseason.
Afterward, Chizik assessed Day One:
"Right now we're in a pretty good place. It's the first day of camp, so you're hoping that you are conditioned, which I think we are, but right now I feel good because I think they all came back in really good shape.
"I thought practice was up-tempo today. I thought, as usual on the first day, they were excited to be out there.
"There were a lot of moving parts for young guys that we tried to play in there some, but overall, I thought it was a really, really good day. I think there will be a lot of teaching moments tonight to go back and evaluate the film, but overall a very solid first day.
"Everything's pretty much where we thought it would be coming out of spring practice. We've made some strides, no question about it, but I also know that we have a long way to go. We have a lot to learn. Those are still new offenses and defenses, and we're going through it a second time after spring.
"Our roster's changed a little bit since spring practice. Jonathan Rose and Zeke Pike are not with our football team anymore. I'm not going to go into the specifics and the details, but their intent is to transfer to another school, and we wish them the best."
The Tigers return to the practice field Thursday afternoon for another non-contact session.
