Auburn celebrated an SEC title last season
By Charles Goldberg
AUBURN, Ala. -- Gus Malzahn still talks about how Auburn came within 13 seconds of winning the national title last year.
The Tigers will try again this season, starting at No. 5 in the coaches' poll that was released Friday. Auburn finished No. 2 last season after falling just short to Florida State in last year's title game.
Auburn has already come a long way. The Tigers weren't even ranked in the preseason last season, but come in 2014 as a major player.
The goal is to make the new four-team playoff and advance from there. Seven of Auburn's opponents are in the coaches' Top 25 preseason poll. Both of Auburn's SEC East Division crossover opponents are there: South Carolina and Georgia.
The back end of the schedule is particularly loaded. Six of the final eight games are against ranked teams.
This coaches' Top 10 has a familiar ring: Florida State is No. 1 followed by Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon and Auburn.
Seven SEC teams are ranked.
The Associated Press poll will be ranked Aug. 17.
