July 23, 2010
HOOVER, Ala. - Six Auburn football players have been named to the 2010 All-Southeastern Conference Media Days Football Team, the league office announced Friday. The 177 members of the media that voted for the team selected senior linebacker Josh Bynes and senior offensive tackle Lee Ziemba to the first team, while junior wide receiver Darvin Adams, senior kicker Wes Byrum, senior defensive back Zac Etheridge and senior running back Mario Fannin were named to the second team. In addition to the preseason All-SEC team, the media also voted for a preseason poll, in which the Tigers were picked to finish in third place in the Western Division. Auburn had the second-most votes to win the division with 10, but trailed Alabama and Arkansas in overall points for the top two spots. Auburn also had the third-most votes to win the overall SEC title with seven, trailing only Alabama (143) and Florida (17). Bynes led Auburn in tackles and ranked sixth in the SEC last year, totaling 104 stops on the season (61 solo, 43 assists). He had six tackles for loss and recovered two fumbles, while also breaking up seven passes and intercepting another. He enters his senior season with 167 career tackles and with a streak of 21 consecutive starts. Ziemba, who was the leading vote-getter among all offensive linemen for the team, has started all 38 games at tackle over the past three seasons since becoming the first true freshman to start a season opener for the Tigers since 2002. He was named to the SEC Coaches All-SEC second team following the 2009 season, and was an honorable mention All-SEC pick by the Associated Press. Adams set an Auburn single-season record with 60 receptions last year, and his 997 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns ranked third best in school history. He ranked second in the SEC in total receiving yards and TD catches, and his 60 catches were third most. Adams set an Auburn bowl game record with 12 catches in the Outback Bowl victory over Northwestern, and finished the season with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games, collecting 138 yards vs. Alabama and 142 vs. the Wildcats. Byrum was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award last season after setting an Auburn single-season record for points by a kicker with 99. He made 15-of-16 field goals, and his percentage of .938 ranked tied for third in the nation among kickers with at least 10 field goal attempts. Byrum also converted all 54 PATs last year, and enters his senior season ranked fifth in school history with 240 career points. Etheridge ranked fifth on the team with 52 tackles (35 solo, 17 assists) last year despite missing the last four games of the season after suffering a season-ending injury against Ole Miss. He also had 3.5 tackles for losses, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery. He enters his senior season with 192 career tackles, which is tops on the team. Fannin totaled 990 all-purpose yards from the H-back position last season, including 285 yards rushing, 413 receiving and 297 on kickoff returns. He has rushed for 971 yards and six touchdowns during his career, including a high of 103 yards against New Mexico State in 2003, and has over 2700 career all-purpose yards. The Tigers will open the 2010 season Sept.45 vs. Arkansas State at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. CT and be televised by FOX Sports Net.
