'A chance to make plays': Auburn DBs like new playbook

AUBURN, Ala. — Jonathon Mincy doesn't need to be reminded that Auburn had only two interceptions last season, and neither was by a cornerback.

Jonathan Mincy, cornerback, wants to change that this year.

"The guys are catching on fast," Mincy said. "I can't wait to put on the pads and play with those guys."

It's OK to watch the clock then. Auburn officially reports as a team Aug. 1 and begins practice Aug. 2. Of course, the players have been working all summer in the weight room and during players-only workouts. The season starts six weeks from this Saturday against Washington State in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Mincy says he already senses a different feel over last year after a spring practice with new defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson

"The way Coach Johnson has his playbook structured, he gives every player a chance to make plays," Mincy said.

It's a welcome change, says cornerback Chris Davis, who predicted the defense will be able to change on the fly this season.

"I think the players will be able to adjust more easily," Davis said.

Mincy says he's watched film of Auburn's first three opponents: Washington State, Arkansas State and Mississippi State. He talks of leadership. And when the question turns to the high-profile race for the starting quarterback job, Mincy talks of competition.

"That something we need at every position," he says.

Mincy said Davis is emerging on and off the field. That's one of the reasons why Davis was chosen to represent Auburn at SEC Media Days.

"He wants to lead by example," Mincy said.

Davis said his plan is simple: "You develop confidence in practice. You keep doing something until you get it right. It’s like  chemistry; everything’s got to be clicking for confidence to come back, and leadership’s got to be there."

Mincy also said he wasn't surprised that Justin Garrett, the star of the newly-created Star position, did well in the spring.

"He's a hard worker not only the field, but in the weight room. He definitely has a new swagger about him."
