AUBURN, Ala. — Rudy Ford, once upon a time, rushed for 73 yards on just six carries as an Auburn freshman running back.
He's been doing other things since.
Ford, Auburn's leading tackler the last two years as a defensive back, was named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list Friday. Appropriately, the award goes to the "most versatile player in major college football."
Ford made 118 tackles and led Auburn in kickoff returns last season. His cameo appearances as a running back came against Western Carolina and Florida Atlantic in 2013.
Ford is also on the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which goes to college football's best defensive player. Ford and six of his teammates were recognized Friday with preseason All-SEC honors from SEC Media Days.
