AUBURN, Ala. -- Count Auburn's Carl Lawson, Cassanova McKinzy and Jonathan Jones were among the country's top defenders named Friday to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which goes to the nation's top defender.
Jones ranked ninth nationally with six interceptions last season, the fifth-most in a single season at Auburn. His interception in the end zone on the last play of the game wrapped up Auburn's win over South Carolina. He was honored after the season with the Zeke Smith Award, which goes to the team's top defensive player.
McKinzy led Auburn in tackles with 75 in 2013 and was second with 91 in 2014. His fumble recovery in the closing minutes at Ole Miss helped ensure an Auburn victory.
Lawson, a defensive lineman, missed last season as he recovered from an injury. But the Nagurski watch remembered his 2013 accomplishments when he was named a Freshman All-American by the Sporting News and 247 Sports. He had 20 tackles in 2013, including an eye-popping 7½ tackles for a loss.
The award will be presented Dec. 7 in Charlotte. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is the keynote speaker.
