AUBURN-- Auburn defensive tackle Zach Clayton and offensive tackle Lee Ziemba were selected in the seventh round of the 2011 National Football League by the Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers, respectively, Saturday. Clayton and Ziemba join Cam Newton and Nick Fairley as the four Auburn players drafted. Newton was the first overall pick of Carolina, while Fairley went thirteenth overall to the Detroit Lions.
Clayton started all 14 games during his senior season, recording 28 tackles, including 8.0 for loss and a quarterback sack, while helping the Tigers to the BCS National Championship. Clayton played in 41 career games at Auburn.
A native of Opelika, Ala., Clayton is the first Tiger drafted by the Titans since DT Sen'Derrick Marks in 2009 and the eighth AU player drafted in franchise history.
A first-team All-American as a senior, Ziemba also won the 2010 Jacobs Blocking Trophy, presented annually to the best blocker in the Southeastern Conference. A four-year starter on the Auburn offensive line, Ziemba holds the school record for most consecutive starts with 52.
Ziemba, a native of Rogers, Ark., was a first-team All-SEC member as a senior after being a second-team pick as a junior.
Since 2000, Auburn has four or more players drafted in six of the last eight years.
Newton is the fifth overall No. 1 pick in school history and the first Auburn player to be selected first in the draft since Aundray Bruce in 1988.
Newton is the first individual since 1949 to lead his team to the national championship, win the Heisman Trophy and be the first selection of the NFL Draft in the same academic year.
With Fairley being by the Detroit Lions in the first round marked the first time since 2005 that two Tigers were drafted in the first round.
