AUBURN - The Auburn football team held its fifth practice of the 2011 spring season with a two-hour workout in full pads Wednesday evening at Hutsell-Rosen Track and the Auburn Soccer Complex.
The practice was scheduled for Wednesday morning, but inclement weather forced the workout to be pushed back to the evening. The Tigers had cool but comfortable conditions for practice, with a light mist falling near the completion of the workout.
The practice began with special teams drills, before the Tigers moved on to individual and position drills. After more special teams and 7-on-7 drills, the offensive and defensive units worked against each other in a short scrimmage for the final portion of the workout.
Following practice, head coach Gene Chizik said the quick pace of the workout was tough for many of the Tigers, but he was pleased with the effort.
"Practice went well, but it was the first time we've been in `practice fast-pace' mode, so I think that got us a little on both sides," said Chizik. "The guys are really, really practicing at a high tempo, and they're trying really hard. We have a ton of mistakes that we have to correct, and we know that, but the bottom line is I'm proud of our guys.
"We've got a long, long way to go, but tonight was a really good first look at true `moving the ball' situations with different things happening in the scrimmage, so we'll learn a lot from this."
The Tigers will return to the practice fields on Friday at 8:45 a.m. CT. All practices are closed to the public.
Auburn's annual spring football game, A-Day, will be held Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Tickets are $5 for general fans and free for AU students with an Auburn Ignited card.
