AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn football team practiced in full pads for the first time Saturday, working out for two hours inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. It marked a close to the first week of spring practice for the Tigers.
The pads allowed the Tigers to include full-contact drills in practice for the first time this spring. The workout also included individual and position drills, but the addition of full-contact team drills provided a new wrinkle to the practice.
Following practice, head coach Gene Chizik stated that he was pleased with the enthusiasm displayed by his squad.
"Today was a good day in terms of the energy," said Chizik. "It was a cool day and I thought they were running around very excited and with a high level of energy. We had some full-contact drills today, which was good to kind of get back into the flow of what we needed to do."
Chizik also noted that although he was pleased with the spirit his team showed, the coaching staff will need to evaluate film of the practice before he had an idea of how well the squad performed.
"I won't know exactly where we were until we watch the film," said Chizik. "It was an energetic first day, and that's what we're looking for is energy, but we'll know more about the execution of things when we watch the film."
The Tigers will take Sunday off before resume spring practice Monday morning at 9 a.m. CT at the Athletics Complex practice fields.
