Auburn, Ala. -
The Gene Chizik Era of Auburn football began Tuesday evening as the Tigers held their first spring practice of 2009, working for 24 periods in helmets and shorts. The practice had a fast pace as the majority of the evening was spent on individual and 7-on-7 drills.
"I was really proud of the way the guys hustled around and tried to be in tune with practice," Chizik said. "I thought they were focused. Some parts of the day we were all over the place. I'm really proud of the way they tried to respond and practice hard and tried to do a good job of soaking in football. That was really encouraging to see. I thought it was a really good first day."
Tuesday's practice was the culmination of Chizik's first 121 days on the job. The first-year head coach discussed his feelings of stepping on the field for the first time.
"It was just a great feeling as it was for the players and other coaches," Chizik said. "We've been waiting three and a half months to do this. It was fun to get out there and get back into the football groove. I think everybody had fun tonight."
Auburn will conduct its second spring practice on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT on the Athletic Complex practice fields. The Tigers follow Thursday's workout with a Saturday practice at 10:30 a.m. in shells.
