New Auburn secondary coach Travaris Robinson tests his arm at Thursday's practice

AUBURN, Ala. -- Gus Malzahn will release his Auburn football team to spring break Friday morning feeling good about the first five practices of spring ball.

"I think that we've taken the steps the right direction," he said after Thursday's work. "I just got through telling our guys that I like where we're at. We have guys pushing themselves trying to get better each day trying to learn to practice, to hang in there mentally and physically. So I think we're in a good position before the break."

And before the wedding of his youngest daughter, Kenzie, on Sunday.

"We'll grade our film and I'll kind of move on to that, but I'm excited. It's a big weekend. We're really looking forward to it," Malzahn said.

He'll be looking for his film study to reinforce what he saw in practice before Auburn return to work on March 31.

"We've got some guys that want to be leaders but right now they're trying to really earn the trust of their coaches, their teammates," Malzahn said. "When you strain guys, usually the leaders rise to the top and that's one of our goals to get down with spring ball and have some established leaders. But it's a process. It's something that has to be consistent. A leader has to do it every day. We're in the process of figuring all those things out."

Auburn was in full pads Thursday, and it included team drills.

"We're going old school trying to get our edge back," he said. "I think they've gotten better each practice... learning to fight through and finish practice."

Malzahn also touched on some of his players...
Quarterback Sean White "can really throw the football. He's very accurate. He's got a strong arm. He understands trajectory and just knows where to put the ball and made some impressive throws."

Former quarterback Jonathan Wallace "has made the transition to receiver. He is in a position to help us this coming year. He's a smart guy, he's showing some toughness."

Early enrollee quarterback Tyler Queen "is really adjusting pretty well. We ask a lot of our quarterbacks and you're talking about a guy that just got here. We're putting in the installation fairly quick and so overall I thought he's really handled it well."

Kamryn Pettway and Chris Laye are doing a good job at H-back.
"We're trying to double train those guys at H-back and tight end. Chandler Cox is another guy that really has done well. Those three guys are primarily getting reps."
