AUBURN, Ala. ― Chandler Cox grew up last season, going from a true freshmen playing H-back in Auburn's season-opener to a wily veteran by year's end.

"I felt totally different in the Louisville game and the Memphis game. I felt like a totally different person," he says. "It took time. It was frustrating. It was stressful. I've got a few grey hairs already, but it's OK."

Chandler Cox, a fullback on the roster, is even getting to run the ball this Auburn spring practice. That's because the Tigers have injuries at tailback, and maybe because Auburn is looking at more options. Auburn's fullbacks and H-backs didn't have a carry last season, though they combined for four catches. Their blocking brothers, the tight ends, had no catches.

Cox is upbeat about spring practice, carries or no.

"There's definitely a different feeling out there, It's a good feeling. I can tell," he said. "It's totally different than what it was last year. I don't know what it is. I don't think anyone knows yet. But there's something brewing in the air. Something good."

Auburn is not practiing this week. The Tigers are off for the university's spring break. Auburn will return to the practice field March 22.

Cox says he's practicing at 236 pounds on the way to, he hopes, 240. He had his wisdom teeth removed after the bowl game and dropped to 222, so that's part of the spring equation, too.

"I know it'll take some time. I feel a lot different than what I did last year, that's for sure," he said

Cox and Kamyrn Pettway are the fullbacks who return.

"We were both young. I was a freshman coming in, he was a redshirt freshman," Cox said. "This year, there's a big difference. I feel different, and I know he feels different. We're just pushing each other to get better each time. When he is out there on the field, I want him to do great. And he wants me to do great when I'm out there.

Cox says there's good competition across the board, including quarterback where newcomer John Franklin III is battling veterans Sean White and Jeremy Johnson and back-from-injury Tyler Queen.

"It doesn't matter who is back there. Whoever is playing quarterback... it feels good," Cox said. "Half the time, I don't even know who's playing quarterback. From what I've seen the last five practices, it's been great. John's new to the system, and he's been doing really good. He's competing with Sean and Jeremy and Tyler. They're all pushing each other to be great. I think it's been a good competition so far."

Cox says Franklin is fast. "I was watching tape in the film room, I was like, 'Wow, he's quick.' That's something that every team needs back there. That's something we also need, some speed. He has it.

"I know Sean and Jeremy are pretty fast, too. He's fast, and he's a good kid, too, outside of football. That's what impressed me. He's a good person outside of football. That's what I really like about him."
