Coach Tommy Tuberville

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn started 2007 spring practice in above average temperatures that reached the low 70s as the Tigers worked for more than two hours in shorts Tuesday at the practice fields behind the Athletics Complex. The Tigers will work in shorts again on Wednesday before moving to full pads on Thursday. Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville addressed the media following Tuesday's opening workout and was pleased with the results from the first day.
"It was a good day to start," said Tuberville. "I am excited about getting back on the field. It was good to see our guys energetic and flying around today. We have a lot of talent on the field. We've got some guys that have speed and quickness."
Tuberville noted that senior quarterback Brandon Cox will be asked to become more of a leader during his third season starting under center.
"Brandon needs to have a great spring," said Tuberville. "We are looking for great things from him this spring, not just underneath center as the quarterback, but also in the huddle and on the sideline as a leader. He has never been the most vocal guy, but neither was (former AU quarterback) Jason Campbell when he was quarterback. In Jason's senior year, he opened up and became much more of a leader."
Tuberville also noted that although the defense has some holes to fill, most notably at linebacker to replace graduated seniors Will Herring and Karibi Dede, the secondary should be a strength, led by senior strong safety Eric Brock.
"The secondary is led by Eric Brock, who had his best year as an Auburn Tiger last year," said Tuberville. "I have noticed him in the off-season working very early in the morning and late at night. He is working to get better. He is going to be the leader back there for us. There is going to be a lot of competition, but I am really anxious to see how Eric leads this young secondary because he has a lot of young guys around him."
Auburn will practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before participating in its first scrimmage Saturday. Wednesday's and Friday's practices will be held at 4:15 p.m. while Thursday's practice will begin at 9:15 a.m. Saturday's scrimmage will be at 10 a.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
