AUBURN, Ala. ― Spring football is in the air, or at least it will be Tuesday.

Auburn begins spring practice that day and will practice, on and off, until April 11. Built in the schedule is time off for the university's spring break, random off days and the A-Day Game on April 9.

Early headlines will include the quarterback race. Coach Gus Malzahn said the quarterback job is open, and the early competition will come from last-year starters Jeremy Johnson and Sean White, and junior college transfer John Franklin III. Gone are leading rusher Peyton Barber and the top receivers.

New defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will put his stamp on the defense for the first time.

Set your winter/spring calendar (though practices are closed to the public). Auburn will practice March 1, March 3, March 5, March 8 and March 10, and then be off March 12-20 for spring break. The Tigers return March 22, and will practice again March 24, March 26, March 29, March 31, April 1, April 5 and April 7.

A-Day is April 9 at 3 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn, as it often does, will practice a final time after A-Day, this time on April 11.
