Jason Smith is back on course at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala.  Versatile Jason Smith is in Auburn and ready for spring practice, and he says he's not going to let a side trip to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College change his plans.

Smith, who originally signed with Auburn in 2013, says he's ready to contribute as an early enrollee.

"They say they're going to give me a shot at quarterback. They're on the road trying to help us win this national championship. I know when the time comes they're going to hit it full-speed ahead," said Smith.

"I'm glad I'm finally here to actually call myself an Auburn Tiger."

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Mobile's McGill-Toolen High School, passed for 1,566 yards and 19 touchdowns, and rushed for another 849 yards and 16 TDs his senior year. He was the MVP of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game as a receiver, catching six passes for 134 yards.

He threw for another 1,566 yards and accounted for 28 touchdowns during his season at Mississippi Gulf Coast.

"I'm glad Auburn stuck with me throughout this long journey," Smith said.

He said he took a good attitude to junior college: "I was looking forward to the season in JUCO and attacking my books as I was going to attack the defenders on the field."

Now, Smith said he hopes to put up the kind of numbers that made his hot prospect.

"I'm going to try to do that or better and help my teammates," he said. "I know the adjustment is going to take a while to get used to the speed of the game. I don't think I'll have a problem with that. I can run. I think reading coverages is a learning process. This is the time to get better."
