Sammie Coates makes a visit to Tampa General Hospital during the Outback Bowl

AUBURN, Ala.  Sammie Coates' good work as a football player has won a lot of headlines, and so has his work as person who cares for others.

The former Auburn receiver won the Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Award in an online vote, it was announced Sunday.

"Anyone who meets Mr. Coates loves him," said Dameyune Craig, his receivers coach Auburn. "He definitely has a big heart. He wants to help everyone."

Coates won the online vote over five others, winning for his close relationship with Kenzie Ray, a cancer patient in Birmingham.

Coates will receive the award at Maxwell Club Awards Gala on March 13th in Atlantic City.

Coates will enter the NFL Draft after his junior season, He had 82 catches for 1,757 yards and 13 touchdowns in three seasons.

The Rare Disease Champion Award is presented "to a leader in the world of college football who has realized his or her potential to make a positive and lasting impact on the rare disease community," the group's webpage says.

The Uplifting Athletes is a national nonprofit organization aligning college football with rare diseases and raising them as a national priority through outreach, research, education, and advocacy.

The other finalists were South Florida offensive lineman Quinterrius Eatmon, Baylor wide receiver Levi Norwood, Minnesota Associate Athletic Director/Football Dan O’Brien, UCLA defensive back Marcus Rios and Eastern Illinois Offensive Coordinator Greg Stevens.
