Jerraud Powers And Heath Evans To Represent Auburn In The Super Bowl
Jan. 25, 2010
AUBURN - Former Auburn football players Jerraud Powers and Heath Evans will represent the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints, respectively, in Super Bowl XLIV Feb. 7 in Miami, Fla. It marks the second time Evans has been part of a Super Bowl squad, as he played in Super Bowl XLII for New England in a loss to the New York Giants. Powers will take part in the Super Bowl in his rookie season in the NFL. Powers was inactive for Sunday's 30-17 AFC Championship game victory over the New York Jets with a foot injury, and his status for the Super Bowl is unknown. He played in 12 games at cornerback during the regular season, starting all 12, and totaling 66 tackles, 10 pass deflections, an interception and a forced fumble. He also intercepted a pass and had three tackles in the Colts' 20-3 victory over Baltimore in the Divisional playoff round.
Auburn will have had at least one player represented in the Super Bowl in 26 of the 44 Super Bowls, including six of the last seven. Powers and Evans will mark the 11th and 12th former Tigers to be part of Super Bowl teams in the last seven years. One other former Tiger was in action during the conference championship games, as Tony Richardson played fullback for the Jets. He caught a pass for two yards and ran once for two more yards while also serving as the lead blocker for the Jets' ground game that ran for 86 yards on 29 carries. Super Bowl XLIV will be televised by CBS with kickoff slated for 5:25 p.m. CT.
