AUBURN, Ala.  The 2014 football season had barely ended Monday night when USA Today said Tuesday morning that Auburn is primed to be national contender in 2015.

USA Today's Paul Myerberg predicted Tuesday Auburn would be No. 2 next season and is one of several saying the Tigers will be a Top 10 team. His prediction came the morning after Ohio State beat Oregon for the 2014 national title.

Myerberg wrote: "Why No. 2? Because adding Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator will give the Tigers the teeth they need to return to the championship race. At the same time, there's no reason to think the offense will struggle in the transition from quarterback Nick Marshall to his likely replacement, Jeremy Johnson — better yet, there's reason to think a more experienced offense will be even more explosive under Gus Malzahn's direction. The Tigers look poised to make another run at a national title."

Auburn finished 23rd in the final coaches poll and 22nd in the Associated Press poll on Tuesday, and was the highest-ranked five-loss team. Auburn played in the national championship game after the 2010 and 2013 seasons.

Monday, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said he's mapping a return to the title game.

Here are some predictions for 2015, all of which could fall under the heading of the "Way-Too-Early Top 25," as used by ESPN.
USA Today's Paul Myerberg: Auburn No. 2
Athlon's Steven Lassan: Auburn No. 8
ESPN's Mark Schlabach: Auburn No. 14
CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd: Auburn No. 14
