Auburn vs. Kentucky
Pat Dye Field at Jordan-Hare Stadium, October 17, 2009
Auburn Head Coach Gene Chizik
"Of course, they are a good football team. They have some very good players and are very well coached. We had our chances to win the game. We didn't do it. I think that you look pretty much directly to the fourth quarter penalties that emerged at that one point in the game, and we couldn't overcome those penalties. Overall right now, the return game didn't help us with field position most of the night. The kids played hard and they played right down to the end. We fell short tonight. We have to go back to work tomorrow. We have a tough game at LSU next week. We have to go back to work."
On what Kentucky took away from the Auburn offense
"They did a really nice job stopping the run most of the night. We had our moments. They played a lot of base defense and didn't give up any big plays to us. We had our chances to hit some open receivers on some different routes, and it just didn't seem like we were clicking in the passing game like we needed to be for whatever reason. That is not on anybody. It is just on the whole offense. It is going to be hard to win games when we score that little points. We weren't able to get it going tonight with any consistency, I think it was very evident. I think you can look and just see that we weren't really consistent all the way around."
Is there any explanation for Chris Todd's performance?
"He is out there trying hard. We haven't done anything new. Sometimes you have those type of games."
You had a good effort the first three quarters, and the fourth quarter, Kentucky started to get more yards, what was the difference?
"Defensively, really, really good the first three quarters, I thought they really did some nice things. They are very talented with some things they were doing in their wildcat type offense with (Randall) Cobb back there. I think he did a great job. They had a couple of big runs on us. We played it well most of the night. We had a couple of missed tackles. They rushed the ball almost 50 times. So, that's what they were going to do. Most of the night, I thought we played really well on defense, but they hit us with a couple of big ones and it really ended up being the difference."
On the effect the wind had on the game
"I thought it was at points in the game. It was kind of blowing a little bit east and west down there. It was calm a little bit. So there were points in the game, definitely early in the game where I thought the wind was somewhat of a factor."
In the third quarter, you had the possibility of a 45-yard field goal, but went for it on fourth down
"We did. Part of it was the wind as we were talking about, and the way it was blowing. Part of it was that we had marched the ball down the field. We felt like we were wearing on them a little bit. We really felt good about making it. It was going to be 45 or maybe a little more with the wind blowing, and we didn't feel great about it."
Do you feel better about your kick and punt coverage team after tonight?
"Our punt coverage has really been good all year. That hasn't been an issue. Our kickoff coverage has obviously been an issue, and I thought for the most part it was better tonight. We mixed it up some. We didn't kick it deep all the time. We kicked it some. We squibbed it some. We bloop kicked it a little bit, but it was better."
