Game 17
#14 South Carolina 61, Auburn 56
January 24, 1998
Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum
Auburn, Ala.

Bryant Smith had a game-high 20 points but it wasn't enough as 14th-ranked South Carolina edged Auburn 61-56 at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. USC took its largest lead at 50-40 with 11:51 left, but only made one more field goal the rest of the way. Auburn tied it at 51 on Smith's stickback of a Mamadou N'diaye missed free throw with 5:55 left. However, the Tigers would not score in nine straight possessions as the Gamecocks pushed the lead to 59-51 with 17 seconds left on 8-8 shooting from the foul line down the stretch. South Carolina was 14-17 (.824) from the foul line while Auburn was 6-11 (.545). Auburn had trouble ending both halves as South Carolina scored the last 7 points of the first half for a 31-24 lead at the break and went on a 8-0 run in the last 5 minutes of the game. LeRon Williams scored 14 points to lead the Gamecocks and BJ McKie had 13.
