Bryant Smith came close to recording Auburn's first triple-double in history with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals in leading the Tigers to a 74-69 win at Tennessee before 13,221 at Thompson-Boling Arena. It was only Auburn's second win in the last 11 tries in Knoxville as four Tigers fouled out. In a defensive struggle, the Tigers led 28-23 at the half. Auburn outscored the Vols 17-6 to open the second half to take a 45-29 lead with 12:59 left. UT closed to within 51-46 with 8 minutes to play before the Tigers once again pulled out in front 66-50 with 3:19 left. However, foul trouble with four of the Tigers' nine scholarship players fouling out and Franklin Williams playing the whole second half with four fouls and missed free throws allowed the Vols to crawl to within 72-69 with 20 seconds left. The Tigers were only 15-30 from the foul line.
