Sophomore guard Bryant Smith led Auburn with 17 points, 6 rebounds and a career-high 6 steals as the Tigers downed Western Carolina 80-55 at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. From the outset, the game was back and forth, with the lead changing hands seven times in the first half. The Catamounts led by as much as seven, but the Tigers battled back and took the lead 31-30 on two free throws by Adrian Chilliest with 2:29 left before settling with a 34-34 tie at the half. Auburn came out and scored the first eight points of the second period. Smith and Wes Flanigan both had 3-pointers, and Doc Robinson scored a fast break basket, all within the first minute of play. Defensively, Auburn dominated WCU by holding them to just 35 percent shooting from the floor, blocked five shots and forced 26 turnovers. Scott Scholtz led Western Carolina with 17 points. Wes Flanigan had 10 points and Franklin Williams totaled 11. Ten Tigers played double-digit minutes.
