Ron Mercer scored a game-high 21 points and Wayne Turner 19 to lead eventual SEC Tournament champion and national runner-up Kentucky to a 92-50 thrashing of Auburn in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals before 19,515 at The Pyramid in Memphis. Wes Flanigan led the Tigers, who shot a miserable 32.8 percent, with 14 points. The Wildcats scored 33 points off 22 Auburn turnovers. UK outrebounded Auburn 56-36. With Kentucky leading 19-16 with 11:42 left in the half, the Wildcats went on a 20-3 run to blow the game open at 39-19 less than six minutes later. UK led 47-23 at the half and coasted the rest of the way. However, Auburn finished with a 16-15 record, marking its third consecutive winning season for the first time in nine years.
