Auburn committed 14 first half turnovers and shot 30 percent in the second half as it lost its ninth consecutive SEC opener 66-56 to South Carolina before 8,806 in Carolina Coliseum. It was the Gamecocks' first win against the Tigers in eight games since joining the SEC in 1991-92. William Gallman scored a game-high 19 points and Bud Johnson 18 to lead USC. Pat Burke, Franklin Williams and Wes Flanigan scored 11 points apiece for the Tigers. Burke recorded his fourth double-double of the season with his 13 rebounds. Carolina jumped out to a 11-2 lead as the Tigers turned the ball over four of its first five possessions. The Tigers closed to within 13-12 with 12:28 left in the first half. USC extended its lead to 29-18 with 3:18 to go in the first before the Tigers closed the gap to 31-26 USC at the half. Auburn scored the first six points of the second half to take its first lead at 32-31 and traded baskets to take a 34-33 lead with 16:14 left. However, Gallman made a layup 11 seconds later to put Carolina up for good. USC went up 47-37 with 8:45 left only to have Auburn close to within 49-44 with 6:26 remaining. The Tigers then went four minutes without scoring and fell behind 55-44 with 2:16 left. The Tigers, which shot 38 percent for the game, finished with 19 turnovers. The Gamecocks shot 41 percent from the field and made 19-28 free throws compared to 2-6 for Auburn.
