Derek Caldwell scored all of his game-high 15 points in the first half and Bryant Smith added 14 as Auburn defeated Winthrop 80-55 before 4,134 at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. In the first half, Caldwell started out hitting the first four of Auburn's shots, two of them 3-pointers to help the Tigers to an early 11-5 lead. The Tigers would not trail the remainder of the game. Alvin Jefferson stuffed in a Pat Burke miss to put the Tigers up 36-19. The Tigers led 45-25 at the half. The second half proved to be much the same as Smith opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and at the 12:35 mark, Mamadou N'diaye's follow-up dunk helped give the Tigers its largest lead of the game at 63-29. Eleven of 12 Tigers scored in the game and Auburn guards Wes Flanigan and Doc Robinson each added 9 points and a combined 11 assists. Center Pat Burke added 8 points and 8 rebounds as Auburn outrebounded the Eagles 53-35. Chad Steele and Tyson Waterman led Winthrop with 14 points each.
