Lance Weems scored a game-high 18 points (5-10 treys) and Pat Burke added 14 points and 8 rebounds to lead Auburn to a 63-58 victory in the first round of the Dr. Pepper Invitational before 4,312 at The Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. Point guard Wes Flanigan chipped in 12 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. After Jay Boykin nailed a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 28-27 Liberty lead, Auburn opened with a 10-3 run for a 37-33 lead. The Flames regained the lead at 49-48 with 7:50 left only to have Franklin Williams give the Tigers the lead for good with a layup on the next possession. However, the Flames tied it at 53 with 5:35 to go but could never muster a lead. The Tigers enjoyed their largest margin of the game with the final score. Larry Jackson led Liberty, who had previously upset VCU by 15 points. Auburn shot 46 percent from the field while limiting Liberty to 43 percent. The Tigers outrebounded the Flames 35-29 and outshot the Flames from 3-point range, 44 percent to 21 percent. The win enabled Auburn to go for its second consecutive tournament title of the season and its second in 13 days.
