Drew Maddux scored a game-high 19 points, 17 in the second half, and Frank Seckar added 16 points, all in the first half, as Vanderbilt defeated #22 Auburn 76-62 in Memorial Gymnasium before 14,683. Auburn turned the ball over 11 times in the first half, 16 for the game, and shot a miserable .397 percent for the night. Trailing 19-16 in the first half, Cliff Ellis inserted four freshmen and a junior college transfer into the lineup and they sparked the Tigers to an 8-3 run for their only lead of the game at 24-22 with 8:08 left in the first half. Vandy followed with nine consecutive points en route to a 35-28 halftime lead. The Tigers scored the first bucket of the second half, but that is as close as they would get. The Commodores enjoyed their largest lead at 58-43 with 11:50 remaining, but the Tigers chipped away to 62-53 with 7:36 left. Pat Burke led Auburn with his second straight double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Tigers' leading scorer, Lance Weems, was held to just 5 points.
