Trailing by as much as 14 points in the first half, 23rd-ranked Auburn stormed back in the second half to take a 95-87 victory over LSU before 8,743 at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum and Jefferson-Pilot TV cameras. Wes Flanigan led Auburn with 21 points, 9 assists and made 10-13 free throws. LSU's Ronnie Henderson recorded a double-double with a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds. Trailing 48-34 with 3:11 to go in the first half, Auburn could only cut the margin to 52-40 at the half. Behind 62-52 with 13:26 to play, Auburn went on a 25-6 run over the next six minutes to take a 79-68 lead. During that span, AU made 12-13 free throws in the physical game. For the contest, Auburn was 30-40 from the foul line while LSU was 7-12. LSU was called for 28 fouls to Auburn's 15. It was a tale of two halves. LSU shot 53.8 percent of its shots (21-39) in the first half and cooled to 31 percent in the second (13-42). Auburn shot 36.4 percent (13-22) in the first half and then heated up to 53.3 percent (16-30) in the second. Pat Burke had a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds and 13 points while Franklin Williams chipped in 17 points. Freshman Bryant Smith had both a game-high 12 points and 6 rebounds, including a big 3-pointer after LSU cut the Auburn lead to seven with 4:30 to play.
