Steve Hamer was the only Tennessee player to score in double figures with a game-high 30 points to lead the Volunteers to a 66-62 victory over Auburn before 12,847 in Thompson-Boling Arena in the SEC opener for both teams. There were 22 lead changes and 11 ties during the game which the margin never exceeded five points. Hamer, who also had a game-high 9 rebounds, scored 14 of the Vols' 17 points to open the second half. The first half featured six ties and 12 lead changes with Tennessee holding a 28-27 lead at intermission. With five more ties and 10 more lead changes in the second half, Auburn pushed its largest lead to 54-49 on Franklin Williams' layup with 8:06 to play. Damon Johnson then hit a jumper followed by Shane Williams knocking down another jumper and a 3-pointer to tie the game at 56 with 5:22 left. With the Tigers leading 60-59 a minute later, UT scored six straight points to enjoy its largest lead at 65-60 with 2:47 remaining. Franklin Williams led Auburn with 14 points and 6 rebounds, Wes Flanigan added 13 points and 6 assists and freshman Derek Caldwell chipped in 12 points and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench. Pat Burke totaled 11 points and 5 rebounds in only 23 minutes due to foul trouble. The Tigers shot .462 percent from the field (.538 in the second half) while the Vols were .500 percent from the field (.615 in the second half).
