AUBURN -- Auburn head basketball coach Tony Barbee spoke to and entertained nearly 1,000 students at his annual BarbeeQ in Auburn Arena on Monday. The students were treated to a barbecue meal and pep talk along with watching practice and a slam dunk contest.
"I love the Auburn Family, which includes our students," said Barbee. "Those guys are great and are without question the best student section in the SEC, and I want to make them the best in the country. We do the BarbeeQ every year to celebrate our students and student section to let them know how much we appreciate them and also to let them know that we need them for this year as well.
"We had 17 home games last year and went 14-3, and we want to be undefeated every year and they play a big part in us winning games. I wanted to let them know from myself and our team thanks, and that we need their support again this year."
The students were served the barbecue in the student only concession area and ate while watching the Tigers practice. Freshmen skywalkers Shaq Johnson and Brian Greene Jr. then put on a dunk show for the students.
The Auburn cheerleaders and Tiger Paws ended the BarbeeQ by giving ideas and examples to the students on how to cheer pregame and during the games in a group effort.
Auburn opens exhibition play Tuesday at 7 pm Central against Victory University in Auburn Arena. Admission is free.
