Auburn basketball will face Texas Tech for just the third time in school history and the first time since 1963 as ESPN announced the 2014 SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchups on Wednesday.
Auburn and Texas Tech will play in Lubbock on Wed., Dec. 3, at a time and network to be announced later.
"There is a tremendous opportunity and a great responsibility in representing the SEC in this challenge," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "There are a handful of coaches that I would venture to say it would be an honor to coach against and Tubby Smith is one of them."
Auburn is 1-1 all-time against Texas Tech, winning at home in 1962 and falling on the road in 1963.
This is the second year of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Auburn lost at Iowa State, 99-70, last season as the Big 12 won the challenge, 7-3.
"In order for the SEC to receive more bids to the NCAA tournament we have to be successful in events like these," Pearl said.
Pearl coached Tennessee to a 2-0 record in the SEC/Big East Challenge, defeating Marquette in 2008 and No. 3 Pittsburgh in 2010. Tennessee's win over previously undefeated Pittsburgh was the first non-conference loss for Pittsburgh in its hometown in nearly six years.
Pearl and Smith have faced off four previous times, each winning twice when the two were at Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively.
