Todd Golden has been named the Director of Basketball Operations for Auburn basketball, head coach Bruce Pearl has announced.
"I was incredibly honored when Coach Pearl approached me about joining his staff at Auburn," Golden said. "After taking into consideration Coach Pearl's past success in the SEC, along with the storied history of Auburn basketball, I felt there was no better program for me to learn and continue to grow as a young basketball coach at the highest level of college competition."
Golden spent the past season as an assistant coach at Columbia, helping the Lions to a 21-13 mark and a spot in the Collegeinsiders.com Tournament. During his one season on the court he worked on Columbia's defense, which held its opponents to 63.3 points per game, second-best in the Ivy League and 31st nationally. Prior to his work on the court he was the Director of Basketball Operations for the 2012-13 season.
"In coaching, in management and in leadership you surround yourself with people better than you and you look for great dimensions," Pearl said. "Having coached Todd Golden and having watched his career in coaching I knew he could be a great asset to help me develop this program."
Golden played at Saint Mary's, graduating in 2007. While playing for the Gaels they made a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament, becoming one of just six players in program history to play in the "Big Dance" twice in his career. In his senior year he was second in the nation with a 3.68 assist to turnover ratio and led the West Coast Conference in three's (31) and was second in the league with a .574 three-point field goal percentage. Golden, a lone captain of the 2007-08 squad, finished his career as Saint Mary's all-time leader in free-throw percentage (.852) and ranks eighth with 269 career assists.
After earning his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Saint Mary's, Golden played two years professionally for Maccabi Haifa in Israel's top division. In 2009 he was co-captain of the USA Open Team, coached by Pearl, that took the gold at the Maccabiah Games.
Golden is the fourth person to join Pearl's staff, joining assistant coaches Tony Jones, Chuck Person and Steven Pearl.
