AUBURN, Ala. — Bruce Pearl felt right at home when he landed in Auburn, so he did what Bruce Pearl does.
He jumped into a mob of fans who enthusiastically greeted Auburn's new basketball coach.
Pearl was hired Tuesday morning and later arrived at Auburn University Regional Airport to the cheers of fans.
"I don't know how long it's going to take, but I want this same reception when we come back with a SEC championship!" Pearl told the fans.
And then a, "War Eagle!"
"My family and I are so happy to be here. We're so blessed to have the opportunity to be your coach. We're going to work really hard every day to reward you."
Looking at the crowd, Pearl said, "This is amazing. This is beyond all our expectations and dreams. All is I can tell you is whatever we do, let's do it together, OK?"
The fans knew it was Pearl's 54th birthday. They serenaded him with "Happy Birthday" as he walked away.
"It feels great. I'm so happy," he said.
Pearl will meet with Auburn officials and his new team Tuesday afternoon before addressing students and others Tuesday night in Auburn Arena.
